Helsinki Supporting Baxter Dury Live @ Village Underground, London 24/02/2015
Helsinki is commonly known as the capital of Finland, but it will soon be more famous as Drew McConnell's collective. Since he started this side-project, Babyshambles' bassist has been collaborating with different artists including Peter Doherty and Albert Hammond Jr from The Strokes.
After Coast OF Silence, Helsinki will be releasing their new album A Guide For The Perplexed, on the 2nd of march 2015. They will also launch the record at the 100 Club on the same day; but in the meantime, they supported Baxter Dury at the Village Underground yesterday.
Drew McConnell arrived on stage along with drummer Adam Falkner and Babyshambles' ex-guitarist Patrick Walden. They began with an old song, Cologne Hotel, which starts quite mellow and suddenly becomes very melodic, joyful and refreshing. McConnell's velvety and sensual voice is intoxicating, while Walden's guitare is mesmerizing.
They played 8 songs, most of them from the new album, including the recently released Rising Heights; as well as Choices, an english version of Je Ne T'Aime Plus by Franco-Spanish singer Manu Chao, in which McConnell's sings a verse in French.
They left after The Batteries Weren't Dead, a powerful and full of soul instrumental song, originally featuring Albert Hammond Jr. Helsinki combines all the elements and emotions needed to create a perfectly balanced gig, which left us longing for the new album, and definitely not perplexed about it!
